Brief description and main aims
The YMCA  Athlone is a public, non profit organization. The organisation is informed by Christian values, seeks to prepare young people for life leadership and service through focused development and sustainable programs.

Main Activities
Residential, physical and emotional care is provided for young people aged between 18 and 35 years of age and provides facilities for culture, sports, games, physical training, recreation and entertainment, on a  non – professional basis. In addition the facilities at the  YMCA is utilized for work shops, celebrations and commoration events pertaining to youth and the broader community, meeting, exercise classes, dancing classes, counselling, support groups, awareness campaigns, health programmes targeting local churches, and NGO’s.
Volunteer tasks
Volunteer Youth Support Staff:
  • Assist with daily after school programmes.
  • Assist weekends when the kids have outings.
  • Assist when camps are arranged and at the campsites.
  • Assist with all types of general work and programmes.
  • Attend all evaluation meetings or Youth gatherings.

Attend all training or workshops that the volunteer is assigned to.

Volunteer requirements / Skills
Qualities of volunteers must be:
  • Honest, friendly, energetic.
  • Excellent social skills.
  • Present a positive attitude at all times.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Display leadership and facilitation experience.
  • Be unassuming, obliging and willing to get involved even in areas that are unfamiliar to them.
Location
Athlone, Cape Town. The project is situated in what is called the Cape Flats which gets it’s name from the flat sandy stretch of land located in the outskirts of Cape Town Central. Residence of the area are predominantly of mixed race decent which is formally referred to as ‘coloured” as specified by the previous Apartheid regime.
Hosting Situation (Board & Lodging)
  • YMCA has on-site accommodation which is utilized by local students. Volunteers could live there, if a room is available. No meals are provided.
  • Volunteers could also be housed with local host families in Athlone.
Additional info
  • This is a short-term or long term placement with a community NGO which works with “street wise” youth.
  • Volunteers become the role models for the youth.
  • THIS PLACEMENT IS NOT SUITED TO VOLUNTEERS WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH ISSUES OF DISCIPLINE, WHO ARE NOT FLEXIBLE OR WHO HAVE DIFFICULTY IDENTIFYING WITH YOUTH ISSUES.
